Homer’s Odyssey
is an ongoing series initiated in 2007-present consisting of twenty-four combine paintings, all approximately 60” x 48”. Stretchers and canvas dually act as supports, reconfigured to create a symbol or object, and translated text is painted on for composition and spatial depth. This series references its predecessor, The Iliad Series [2001-2003] where text markings were utilized to build layered imagery. Each ‘book’ is multi-layered and includes a formal translation by various English translators, references to 20th c. artists, and the present time in which I exist.

Throughout Homer’s Odyssey short narratives were embedded within each book/chapter; some are mentioned several times in multiple chapters.

Some are fables with something to learn from, some are predictions, some allegories. Many are fascinating and lead to more reading.

While working on the big Odyssey paintings which take a few years to complete I am laterally working on smaller paintings 30” x 40” to capture their presence.

The Little Odyssey series began in 2017 and will continue until the Odyssey is complete.
